Writing at base of Memorial. This technique was an innovation by Barney Zeitz. He cut the letters through the stainless steel plate 3/16". He welded backing plates, then filled the void with silicon bronze with the TIG welder, being careful not to overheat the edges. He then ground and polished the lettering to an even surface, and applied patina to darken the bronze. This lettering has the same hand hewn quality as the rest of the welded sculpture.
The sculpture started as a model, 24" tall and forged and welded stainless steel, done to one sixth scale. The actual monument is over twelve feet tall. Barney was chosen as a finalist from a drawing, and did the model as one of three finalists. He was awarded the commission, signed a contract, and started construction in February 2001. The techniques used for the memorial were the same as the model, but more detail was possible.
